We just finished up the entryway closet, so let’s get after the linen closet. In this post, I will once again list some big ideas to get you started. And, as always, I’ll follow that up in future posts with specifics and recommendations.
As always, don’t feel intimidated! You got this! Small Tasks = Big Differences!
Let’s get started!
But first, let’s be honest—linen closets have a way of turning into chaotic towers of mismatched towels, crumpled sheets, and random toiletries. But with a little effort, you can transform yours into a calm, clean, and usable space.
Here’s how to get it done without that overwhelming feeling:
1. Empty It Out
Pull everything out so you can see what you’re working with. It’s the only way to uncover expired products, raggedy towels, and those pillowcases with no matching set.
2. Start the Declutter Process
Ask yourself:
-
Do I really need 12 hand towels?
-
Are these sheets even comfortable?
-
When was the last time I used that half-empty bottle of guest shampoo?
Donate what’s still good, toss what’s not.
3. Group Like Items Together
Sort into categories:
-
Bath towels
-
Hand towels
-
Washcloths
-
Sheet sets (Tip: keep each set folded inside one of the pillowcases!)
-
Guest linens
-
Toiletries & backup supplies
This makes it easier to find what you need.
4. Fold with Purpose
Neat folding saves space. Try rolling towels or using the KonMari method for a clean, hotel-like look.
- Tip: Stack by size—biggest on the bottom, smallest up top.
5. Contain the Small Stuff
Baskets or bins are perfect for corralling:
-
Toilet paper
-
Travel-sized toiletries
-
First-aid supplies
-
Extra soap or shampoo
-
Tip: Label them so everyone in the household knows where things belong.
-
6. Use Shelf Dividers or Adjustable Shelves
Prevent toppling stacks by using shelf dividers. If your shelves are tall, add an extra one to reduce wasted space between stacks.
Bonus Tip: Keep Everyday Items Front and Center
Store your most-used items at eye level. Less-used or seasonal stuff can go up top or down low.
Remember, a well-organized linen closet isn’t just nice to look at—it saves time, reduces stress, and makes hosting guests a breeze. It’s a small space that can make a big difference.
