We are on a roll! Now it is time to turn our attention to the entryway closet. In this post, I list some big ideas to get you started. As always, I’ll follow that up in future posts with specifics and recommendations.
As always, don’t feel intimidated! You got this! Small Tasks = Big Differences!
Let’s get started!
The entryway closet is your home’s first impression and it often becomes a catch-all for coats, shoes, umbrellas, cleaning supplies – you name it – coats jammed on hangers, shoes in a tangled pile, and bags tossed wherever they land… Sound familiar?
But with a little strategy, this space can become one of the most functional areas in your home. With just a few smart tweaks, your entryway closet can become a calm, functional zone instead of a stress-inducing mess.
Here’s how to tackle it:
1. Clear It Out First
Take everything out. Yes, everything. It’s the only way to really see what’s hiding in there—and what doesn’t belong. This is also the perfect time to toss or donate what you don’t use.
2. Purge the Extras
You probably don’t need every coat you own in the entryway year-round. Store off-season items elsewhere and donate anything you haven’t worn in over a year.
3. Designate Zones
Group your items:
-
Coats & jackets (use sturdy hangers!)
-
Shoes (limit to everyday pairs)
-
Bags & backpacks
-
Hats, gloves, scarves
-
Keys, dog leashes, sunglasses
When each category has a home, clutter has fewer places to hide.
4. Upgrade the Storage
A few game-changing additions:
-
Shoe rack or boot tray for the floor
-
Over-the-door organizer for small accessories (Important: Don’t overlook the back of the door(s)!)
-
Hooks or pegs inside the door for bags or umbrellas
-
Bins or baskets on the shelf for gloves, hats, etc.
-
Labeled drawers or bins! (Don’t forget this part! It really helps!)
5. Add a Catch-All Basket
This is your “real life” buffer. Lost glove? Random receipt? Toss it in here for later sorting so clutter doesn’t spill into the rest of the house. (Just be sure to not let it get out of control!)
6. Keep It Seasonal
Every few months, swap out items based on the weather. No need for beach gear in January or scarves in July. Store snow boots and puffer coats elsewhere once spring hits, and vice versa. The less you store in the closet, the easier it stays tidy.
Final Tip: Keep It Realistic
Your closet doesn’t need to look like a magazine spread. It just needs to work for you. The goal is function, not perfection. Small Closet = Big Impact.
